Meet The World's Most Influential Living Philospher

Updated: Sep 9, 2021

A conversation with the word’s most influential living philosopher

What an absolute buzz it was to be joined by the world’s most influential living philosopher, Peter Singer to speak about his life and work on my podcast Perspectives recently

Peter Singer is the leading voice in influencing public morality, he’s the man behind the growing movement of effective altruism. He’s also the founder of ‘The Live You Can Save’, the professor of bioethics at Princeton University and the author and co-author of over 50 books.

His work on animal rights is credited for starting the animal rights movement, when he wrote the book Animal Liberation in the 1970’s. His controversial stands on some bioethical issues have made him one of the world’s most widely recognized public intellectuals

Together we attempted to answer some of life’s toughest questions… and the burning questions I had for him.In particular I was keen to have his unpacking of the philosophy of Utilitarianism. I wanted to know how it can work to help us assess what is the best way to discover what is wrong and what is right. His main moral principle is that “If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it,” which really resonates with me

In the podcast we explore together:

4.30 The animal liberation movement and the progress we're making.

20.35 Utilitarianism, the right, wrong, good and bad

23.50 How the world needs controversial ideas

20.45 Freedom of thought & discussion

45:53 What is effect altruism and why it's more important than ever
